Packaging inspired by Chines Calligraphy by Esther Li(via thedsgnblog)
“The design language is inspired by Chinese calligraphy, which valued the balance of order and dynamism. It also uses the direction of writing and reading in old Chinese scripts - top to bottom, right to left. The patterns are inspired by the region where the majority of the immigrants are from, Fujian, China, which is made up of primarily mountainous areas. Chinese characters for mountain, water and fields are also used to bring forward the geography of the region”

Embroidered Typography by Maricor/Maricar (via theoinglis) /
Maricor/Maricar, the studio of Australian twins Maricor and Maricar Manalo, updated their website in February with a new design and lots of new work. Just realised I’ve had this post in my drafts since then!
Big fan of all their work, very original. I especially love the embroidered and colourful typography. Think they have posted about their process in the past on their blog, or pictures on Instagram. Looking forward to perhaps seeing some embroidery in person at Pick Me Up this year.
Clever, cheeky & fun. “Sorted Books” by Nina Katchadourian (via farewell-kingdom)
“I suddenly recalled a moment in the university library when, looking for a book, I had turned my head sideways as I walked down the stacks and thought how spectacular it would be if all the titles formed an accidental sentence when read one after the other in a long chain. Standing amidst the bookshelves in Half Moon Bay, my next move was simply to make this imaginary accident real. I spent days shifting and arranging books, composing them so that their titles formed short sentences. The exercise was intimate, like a form of portraiture, and it felt important that the books I selected should function as a cross section of the larger collection.”

Letters from Newhouse Books
I’ve been following Michael Newhouse’s tumblr blog since around the time it started a couple of years ago.
The illustrator from Montana posts an eclectic mix of items scanned from his bookshelf. Over time there have been some fantastic old characters, a few of which I’ve collected here. Many taken from Signist’s Modern Book of Alphabets by F. Delamotte (1906).
I love these hand-drawn – and in some case quite wobbly – letters and numbers. Note the abundance of drop-shadows used to emphasise each letterform. Click on each to see their origin.

This was my favorite place we went today. The walls are covered with print screen posters. They make them right there in the shop, for everyone to see and it’s really cool to see it done. Some of the posters were replicas of real ones, and others were inspired by various events and concerts. I bought one that is focused around Music City and it’s colorful and wonderful.
